The following information is about Acidification.

Acidification Defined

This process happens when compounds like ammonia, nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxides are converted in a chemical reaction into acidic substances. Most of the compounds are a direct result of air pollution.
.
Example RXN
2FeS2 + 6H2O + 7O2 = 4SO42- + 8H+ + 2Fe(OH)2

This definition is in context to Atmospheric Chemistry. See more contextual defintions for Acidification.

  • Ocean Acidification on the Rise - not good news: At a race this past weekend I met a triathlete who works at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). We talked about the critical issue of ocean acidification which is a consequence of CO2 saturation. That's because oceans, not rain forests, are the most important absorber of greenhouse gases on the planet. Check out this site for information on the dire conditions of our oceans.
