Atmospheric Chemistry > Ethanol
The following information is about Ethanol.
Ethanol Defined
Also known as ethyl alcohol or alcohol, (C2H5OH) is an oxygenated hydrocarbon that can be burned as a fuel, or blended into gasoline. Thought of as an alternative fuel and clean fuel, ethanol is a renewable energy source that is made from corn or other grains. If blended into gasoline, ethanol helps with the combustion process and therefore less unburned hydrocarbons form. Ethanol blended fuels competed with methyltertbutylether (MTBE), but because of the cost and the fact MTBE can be shipped through exisisting pipelines, MTBE was chosen. MTBE is now being banned because of its ability to travel in ground water and the bad taste it imparts to drinking water, because of this ethanol is once again being put back into the gas.
Ethylbenzene- C8H10, Colorless, flammable liquid with an aromatic odor, it is found in coal tar, petroleum, as well as in manufactured products like inks, insecticides, and paints. Ethylbenzene is also used to make styrene. It is during the manufacturing process that ethylbenzene becomes an airborne hazard. It takes about 3 days for ethylbenzene to breakdown into other chemicals. Exposure to ethylbenzene causes dizziness, throat and eye irritation, tightening of the chest, and a burning sensation in the eyes. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has set an occupational exposure limit of 100 ppm of ethylbenzene for an 8-hour workday for a 40-hour workweek. - Candidates' energy policies | The Jakarta Post: Presidential candidate Megawati Soekarnoputri and her running mate Prabowo Subianto have proposed to build geothermal and hydroelectric plants to generate 10,000 MW, to build DME refineries, build 56-MTPA bio-ethanol plants (4 million hectares will be dedicated to growing sugar palms, which will create 24 million jobs). An important lesson from global success stories in developing alternative energies (Brazil with its "Pro-Etha nol" program, South Africa's coal liquefaction, Argentina' ;s CNG, and Japan/Scandina via with their renewables) is that the approach must be integrated, have a long-term vision and definitely requires full government commitment. We are far from meeting these requirements. Certainly Megawati and Prabowo will face challenges in the details and implementation , not just with the bio-methanol ... . Dimethyl ether (CH3OCH3) is a promising energy as a substitute for LPG and other fuels.
- Biomass replacing natural gas at Benson ethanol plant: f you're spending upwards of $1 million per month for natural gas to power your ethanol plant, a serious look at renewable resources such as corn cobs, wood chips, even saw dust (sprayed with glycerin for dust control) to offset this cost seems smart.
