The following information is about Oxidation.
Oxidation Defined
A process that results in a species having a higher oxidation state, that is, the net loss of electrons from an atom. Quite often oxygen is involved in the oxidation of another atom therefore it is an oxidant.

Scientists Peel Away Mystery Behind Gold's Catalytic Prowess
Published September 5, 2008, 5:30 am, Science Daily
Using the world's most powerful microscopes for chemical analysis, scientists have pinpointed where the conversion of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide occurs when gold is supported on iron oxide. CO oxidation is critical to firefighters and others who wear protect masks when entering a burning building. Bilayer clusters of atoms less than a nanometer in dimension are found to be responsible for ...
Scientists peel away the mystery behind gold's catalytic prowess
Published September 4, 2008, 2:10 pm, PhysOrg
Few materials have exercised as much of a hold on the human imagination, or on human history, as has gold. But for all of its popular uses - money, medals, jewelry and more - gold's potential as a catalyst lay hidden until the 1980s, when Masatake Haruta and Graham Hutchings independently discovered that gold, which had long been considered inactive, could be an extraordinarily good catalyst. ...
Scientists peel away the mystery behind gold's catalytic prowess
Published September 4, 2008, 1:24 pm, EurekAlert!
( Lehigh University ) Using the world's most powerful microscopes for chemical analysis, scientists have pinpointed where the conversion of CO to CO2 occurs when gold is supported on iron oxide. CO oxidation is critical to firefighters and others who wear protect masks when entering a burning building. The researchers represent Lehigh and Cardiff Universities and the US National Institute of ...

- Mechanism Of Cell Death Clarified In Oxidative Stress: "So far, it was assumed that oxidative stress is detrimental to cells by unspecific oxidation of many essential biomolecules, such as proteins and lipids. That is why we were amazed to find that in cells lacking either glutathione or glutathione peroxidase 4, a distinctive signaling pathway is engaged, which causes cell death."
