Terpene Defined

A naturally occurring organic compound, of the general empirical formula, C10H16, biologically built from a naturally occurring "monomer" called isoprene, C5H8, which is found as a volatile oil in plants. A clearly important--and olifactorily obvious--example is alpha-terpinene found in lemon oil. [Analytical Chemistry; v65; 2528-33; 1993.] [Food Technology; v48; 110-12; 1994.]
